Vauban, Sébastien Le Prestre de

Vauban, Sébastien Le Prestre de
(1633-1707)
   marshal of France
A military engineer who revolutionized fortification and siege strategies during the reign of louis XIV, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban was born in Foucheret (today Saint-Léger-Vauban), Burgundy. As commissioner of fortifications (1678), he made great efforts to encircle the kingdom with fortresses, in particular along the Escaut, the Meuse, and the Rhine Rivers. He also constructed large ports, canals, and the aqueduct at Maintenon. Vauban was interested in offensive techniques, too, and his methods allowed him to win a number of sieges; he was particularly successful during the War of the League of Augsburg in taking Mons, Namur, and Steinkerque. Vauban not only wrote works on the art of warfare but also on politics, yet his freethinking attitude brought about his disgrace (his Project d'une dime royale was banned in 1703).
